The United States Air Force, established as an independent military branch on September 18, 1947, evolved from the Army Air Forces that served with distinction in World War II. As the aerial warfare branch of the U.S. Armed Forces, the Air Force operates approximately 200 bases worldwide and maintains a force of around 330,000 active duty personnel. Charged with defending the nation through air, space, and cyberspace, the Air Force is home to some of the world's most advanced aircraft, including the F-22 Raptor, B-2 Spirit stealth bomber, and the iconic F-35 Lightning II.
