The United States Army, the oldest and largest branch of the U.S. Armed Forces, traces its origins to June 14, 1775, when the Continental Army was established by the Second Continental Congress to fight in the American Revolutionary War. Today the Army operates over 100 installations across the United States and around the world, with approximately 450,000 active duty soldiers. Known as the backbone of American ground combat power, the Army's proud motto — “This We’ll Defend” — reflects its enduring commitment to protecting the nation and its people through every era of American history.
