Death Valley National Park, established in 1994 and straddling the California-Nevada border, is the largest national park in the contiguous United States and holds the record for the hottest air temperature ever reliably recorded on earth — 134°F at Furnace Creek in 1913. Yet this extreme landscape of salt flats, sand dunes, volcanic craters, and canyon narrows is anything but lifeless. Wildflower superbloom years transform the valley floor into a carpet of color, bighorn sheep navigate the rocky slopes, and the night skies above Badwater Basin — 282 feet below sea level, the lowest point in North America — blaze with stars.
